Berchtold's dwarf pondweed ( Potamogeton berchtoldii ) is a species of the genus pondweed ( Potamogeton ) within the family of the pondweed family (Potamogetonaceae). It is widespread in the northern hemisphere . The name honors the Bohemian botanist Friedrich Graf von Berchtold , Freiherr von Ungarschitz (Platz bei Neuhaus 25.10.1781 - 3.4.1876 Schloss Buchlewitz near Ungarisch-Hradisch), who published a work The Potamogeta of Bohemia together with Franz Xaver Fieber in 1838 .

description

Berchtold's dwarf pondweed is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 100 centimeters. The rhizome is thin or completely absent. The leaves are three-veined, up to 2 millimeters wide, at least at the base they have two glandular humps and a clear central stripe network. The lower lateral nerves open almost at right angles 0.5 to 1 millimeter below the tip of the leaf into the middle nerve. The middle nerve is accompanied by white, elongated cells in the middle and lower leaf area. The "stipules" are completely open.

The flowering period is from June to September. The heady ear is 2 to 8 millimeters long.

The fruit is olive green, 2 to 2.5 millimeters long, with a blunt keel and the beak is short and hooked.

The spindle-shaped turions are on the stem.

The chromosome number of the species is 2n = 26.

Occurrence

Berchtold's dwarf pondweed is widespread in the northern hemisphere in North America , Eurasia , the Azores and Madeira, and in North Africa. In Europe it occurs only in the southernmost areas, where it is rare or absent entirely. In the Allgäu Alps, in the Tyrolean part, it rises up to 1760 meters above sea level in a pond on the Salzbüheljoch near Lechleiten .

Berchtold's dwarf pondweed grows in standing or flowing, nutrient-poor to nutrient-rich, often alkaline-rich waters . It occurs in societies of the order Potamogetonetalia.

Systematics

There are three subspecies of this species:

  • Potamogeton berchtoldii subsp. berchtoldii : It occurs in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere.
  • Potamogeton berchtoldii subsp. clystocarpus (Fernald) Les & Tippery : It occurs in Texas.
  • Potamogeton berchtoldii subsp. gemmiparus (JWRobbins) Les & Tippery : It occurs from southeastern Canada to the northeastern USA.
