The spring cinquefoil ( Potentilla neumanniana Rchb. , Syn .: Potentilla tabernaemontani Aschers .; Potentilla verna auct. ) Is a rose plant (Rosaceae) that is most common in Central Europe . It blooms from March to May, sometimes a second time in late summer and autumn.

Appearance

This species is persistent and often forms large, carpet-like growth forms. The basal sheets are finger-shaped and consist of five to seven wedge-shaped to obovate leaflets. These are 1 to 3 cm long and have two to five teeth on each side. The free part of the stipules of the basal leaves is very narrow, linear to lanceolate (different from reddish cinquefoil ). The flowering shoots grow laterally from the axils of the previous year's basal leaves, some of which had passed during the flowering period. They are prostrate, with the tip ascending, 5–15 cm long and have several stem leaves. The inflorescence is 3- to 10-flowered and often branched out from the axils of the lower stem leaves. The flowers are yellow and have a diameter of 10-18 mm. Only plants that do not have star hairs are referred to as Potentilla neumanniana (see e.g. sand cinquefoil ). The hair consists only of simple, 2–3 mm long hairs ("curry hair"), which are mostly directed forward, more rarely almost protruding. In the upper part of the flower shoots and on the petioles there are shorter, curved hairs, sometimes also short glandular hairs.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 42, but also 28, 49, 56, 63 or 84.

distribution

Site conditions and socialization

Potentilla neumanniana grows on dry sites such as rock heads, open gravel and sandy soils, also on vineyard walls, road and embankments and roadsides. It occurs in societies of the order Brometalia and the class Sedo-Scleranthetea, but also in those of the Erico-Pinion association.

General distribution

The species occurs mainly in temperate Europe from northern Spain in the west to Belarus and Bulgaria in the east. To the north to Scotland, Central Norway, Estonia, Karelia, in the south to Corsica, in Italy to Apulia, on the Balkan Peninsula to Macedonia. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises in the Tyrolean part between Holzgau and Vorderer Mutte up to an altitude of 1650 meters.

Distribution in Germany

The spring cinquefoil is very common in Germany. It rarely occurs in northern Germany.

Others

The flowers are pollinated by insects.

The spring cinquefoil is extremely diverse and variable. So far, no satisfactory classification of the species has been achieved. Sometimes up to 10 varieties are differentiated and these in turn are divided into several forms. However, transitions between the individual forms occur almost everywhere.
