Pouso Alegre , officially Portuguese Município de Pouso Alegre , is a city in Brazil in the south of the state of Minas Gerais . According to an estimate from July 1, 2019, it had 150,737 inhabitants over an area of around 542.8 km².
history
The first Europeans reached the city area in 1596 in search of gold . After they found what they were looking for, they founded a settlement called "Matosinho do Mandu" or "Bom Jesus do Matozinhos". In 1797 it was renamed Pouso Alegre, which roughly means "nice stay". In 1831 Pouso Alegre was raised to the rank of town.
The Roman Catholic diocese of Pouso Alegre, established in 1900, became the Archdiocese of Pouso Alegre in 1962 .
