Preppy

In the English-speaking world, students or graduates of a renowned secondary school (“ Preparatory School ”) who come from wealthy parents who often belong to the so-called WASPs , are more conservative and have a corresponding attitude, are called Preppy , Preppie or Prep Maintain lifestyle. They are often viewed by critics as snobs .

The word creation originated in the United States, especially New England , in the 1950s . The abbreviation prep for students of the “Preparatory Schools” found its way into general usage; since then preppy / preppie has been the name for the lifestyle and also for the dress code of this group of people.

In dictionaries the word is translated as "neat" and colloquially as "Schnieke".

Preppy is not just a clothing fashion, but an elitist lifestyle of people with a clear self-esteem and conservative attitude towards life, who want to emphasize their (desired or factual) belonging to an upper social class and who take their material prosperity for granted, but do not express it (rather with understatement ) want to flaunt.

The Ivy Look from the 1960s is at the same time a fashion direction of the Preppy style that originated in the universities of the Ivy League in the northeastern United States. An example of the influence is Mike Nichols ' 1967 film The Graduation : the main character Benjamin Braddock is a preppy.

The basic styling rules are reminiscent of the popper style of the 1980s. Polo shirts , tweed suits , blazers in school uniform -Look, Cordjacken with elbow protectors, button-down shirts, chinos and loafers among them just as monograms and coats of arms, horn-rimmed glasses , chronograph and narrow belt as accessories . For example, design elements from sailing fashion are combined with classic British (Scottish) patterns (checked, stripe and diamond patterns, called argyle patterns ); the materials are high quality and exclusive (for example cashmere wool ).

Typical brands include Marc O'Polo , Lacoste , Tommy Hilfiger , LL Bean , Abercrombie & Fitch , Polo Ralph Lauren , Lilly Pulitzer , Brooks Brothers , Vineyard Vines , J. Crew and Fred Perry . The fashion models of the Preppys used to be the young John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie ; nowadays Prince William and Kate Middleton .
