The Prinzenpalais was a simple modern city palace on the Nassau-Usingen line and is now a monument in Usingen , a town in the Hochtaunus district in Hesse .

location

The former small city palace is located in the center of Usingen on the B456 in Obergasse 23 . The listed building can be seen in connection with the adjoining so-called official house from around 1730, the birthplace of the former Nassau liberal politician August Hergenhahn (born April 16, 1804 in Usingen; † December 29, 1874 in Wiesbaden ). Both houses, which are of the same style, share a plot of land with a wall in front of the street between the two houses. In the 20th century there was a building at the back that connected the two houses, but has since been demolished.

history

In 1768 Friedrich August von Nassau-Usingen acquired the Freihof ( Hattsteiner Hof ) at the Usinger Obertor. On his behalf, the master builder Johann Wilhelm Faber (1708–1780) built the palace that Friedrich August lived in as a prince . After he became prince in 1803 , he moved to the Biebrich Castle . The Prinzenpalais was sold to the postman and wine merchant Graf.

With the formation of the Usingen district , the Prinzenpalais was converted into a district office . After the Second World War , some additions were made to meet the increased space requirements of the administration. The building was now mainly referred to as the "district house". With the regional reform in Hesse , the Usingen district was dissolved and became part of the Hochtaunus district . The county seat was Bad Homburg vor der Höhe . In the Prinzenpalais there was initially a branch office of the district administration and in particular the vehicle registration office .

description

The small palace is a rectangular two-storey structure with three by five axes with a mansard hipped roof . The five-axis longer side is directed to the east frontage, has centered on both floors a central projection and has a second floor balcony with sweeping edition ornaments from sandstone and decorated railings. The entrance used to have a double-sided flight of stairs with a handrail of the same design and a cellar entrance in front of it . The triangular gable with the intertwined and gilded initials "FA" (by Friedrich August von Nassau-Usingen), designed as a coat of arms, extends into the hipped roof, the bent roof sides of which have a third storey and the windows of which are only slightly protruding round dormers .

The house has split lattice windows .

Todays use

Until the beginning of 2000, the property was used as an administrative location for various state and district authorities, including the vehicle registration office and the advice center for parents, children and young people in the district were located in the buildings until 2014.

In the meantime, the dilapidated rear extensions have been torn down and a renovation project has started.
