Propionic acid propyl ester is a naturally occurring fruit ester and a chemical compound from the group of carboxylic acid esters .
Occurrence
Propionic acid propyl ester has been detected among the volatile components of grapes, fresh apples, apple juice, apricots, melons, papaya, pears, certain types of cheese, rum, cider, popcorn, olives, malt whiskey and coffee.
Extraction and presentation
Propyl propionate can be obtained by esterifying propyl alcohol with propionic acid in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid or boron trifluoride .
properties
Propionate is a colorless liquid with a pear-like odor that is sparingly soluble in water.
use
Propionic acid propyl ester is used in automotive refinishing, OEM paints, equipment coatings, printing inks and as a polymerization solvent. Its good activity enables an efficient viscosity reduction of the resin, which enables the development of VOC- poor coatings. Its high electrical resistance is beneficial in optimizing the transfer efficiency of coatings applied via electrostatic sprayers. The compound is used in the flavor and fragrance industry and as a solvent.
safety instructions
The vapors of propionic acid propyl ester can form an explosive mixture with air ( flash point 24 ° C, ignition temperature 445 ° C).
