Propstei Bernau

The Propstei Bernau was an archdeacon in the Diocese of Brandenburg .

The Propstei Bernau extended approximately to the area of Niederbarnim , from Bötzow (Oranienburg) in the west to Oderberg in the east, and Werneuchen in the south. The Sedes Bernau , which roughly corresponded to the area, comprised 65 villages in the Middle Ages. The provost lived at the Marienkirche in Bernau .

history

The emergence of the church administrative structures in the so-called new lands east of the Havel and Spree is unknown. At least since 1244 the area was owned by the Brandenburg Ascanians. The oldest mention of a provost is from 1292, with the first mention of the place Bernau. The provost Nikolaus became known, who was killed in 1324 by angry Berlin citizens.

In the 14th and 15th centuries, the Propstei Bernau became a coveted benefice for people close to the electoral court in Berlin. Dietrich Mörner was also Protonotarius and Chancellor in Berlin, Wolfgang Redorfer was a respected scholar.
