Ethylene glycol monopropyl ether is a chemical compound from the group of glycol ethers .

Extraction and presentation

Ethylene glycol monopropyl ether is obtained by reacting ethylene oxide with 1-propanol and a suitable catalyst . In 2002 more than 4,500 tons were produced in the USA.

use

Ethylene glycol monopropyl ether is used as a solvent in the coatings industry and in printing inks. Today it is only reserved for a few special applications. It has been replaced industrially by other similar solvents.

properties

Glycol monoalkyl ethers are inert towards light metals such as aluminum or magnesium. However, slow superficial corrosion can be observed at the boiling point.

safety instructions

The vapors of ethylene glycol monopropyl ether can form an explosive mixture with air ( flash point 51 ° C, ignition temperature 230 ° C). The compound reacts violently with strong oxidizing agents .
