history

The powder mill was probably built in the 15th century, making it one of the oldest gunpowder mills in the Franconian Empire . The production of the powder required the energy of the water to crush the constituents and to shape them into grains between the mill rollers. In the Rüdenhausen powder mill, in addition to gunpowder, explosives were also produced, which were sold to the surrounding area.

The community bills show many purchases for powder from the different rulers. In particular, the villages in the area bought in peacetime, because shots of joy were fired for processions , baptisms , weddings and celebrations. Powder was also used when the Counts of Castell , to whose territory the mill belonged, moved into Rüdenhausen. In times of war the mill was given special protection.

In 1715 a new building was initiated by the miller Julius Bensberger or Obenberger. However, a short time later, on February 6, 1724, there was an explosion . The miller Heinrich Unverzagt and his daughter-in-law died. The reconstruction was completed by 1725. In 1730 the mill was owned by Thomas Freytag. Another explosion made a new building necessary. Another explosion in 1756 killed a journeyman.

The Müller family owned the mill between 1795 and 1991. In 1909 the arms manufacturer Frankonia from Würzburg planned to take over the mill, but negotiations failed and the mill remained in the private hands of the Müller family. The last explosion occurred in 1921. The operation was then discontinued. Today the powder mill is a hamlet in the area of the Rüdenhausen market .
