The Wendefurth pumped storage power plant , also known as the Wendefurth pumped storage power plant , is the only pumped storage power plant in Saxony-Anhalt . It is in the district resin near the Thaler district Wendefurth on the Bode and uses a above the Wendefurth located upper reservoir for the generation of electric current . Construction began in 1960 and commissioning in 1967. From 2012 to 2014, the power plant was subjected to an overhaul and modernization.
The Wendefurth power plant is operated by Vattenfall as a peak load power plant and uses unneeded electrical energy from base load power plants to draw water from the Wendefurth dam ( 351.9 m above sea level ) below the Rappbode dam via two 383 m long pipelines with a diameter each 3.4 m and a mean head of 126 m into an upper basin ( 468.4 m ) south of the Wendefurth dam . With a total storage space of 1.97 million m³, this has a working capacity of 523 MWh.
Two Francis pump turbines are installed in the power plant 's nacelle , which develop an output of 40 MW each in turbine operation at a nominal flow rate of 39 m³ / s and a head of 126 m. They are directly coupled to three-phase synchronous generators that can be operated as an electric motor for pumping . In this operating mode, the nominal output is 2 x 36 MW.
Between 2012 and 2014 the pumped storage power plant was revised and modernized. It was restarted at the end of July 2014.
The grid connection is made via the Hüttenrode switchgear at the 110 kV high voltage level in the power grid of the distribution network operator HSN Magdeburg , a subsidiary of the Städtische Werke Magdeburg (SWM).
