action

Edgar Eaton, a somewhat worn-out comic artist who still works in a small comic shop for his Jewish boss Markowitz, has to move back to his parents after the divorce. In his late brother's room he finds one of the infamous Toulon dolls. As the 30th anniversary of his murders approaches, a large convention is planned where he would like to sell them. He later meets the enchanting Ashley Summers, an old childhood sweetheart who is now flaring up again. She too would like to go to the convention with him. His boss, who desperately wants to tow a woman again, pushes himself into this equation. So they arrive on the eve of the convention.

To pass the time, they attend a tour of the Toulon estate led by Officer Carol Doreski, who also solved the murders at the time. Markowitz is disgusted by the Nazi paraphernalia and makes cynical jokes. Then they return to the hotel. Markowitz meets the manga fan Nerissa at the bar. In the meantime, the dolls disappear first, then a series of murders begins , of all people, who are considered inferior according to race theory : Jews, lesbians and migrants are the first to be killed. The dolls have come to life and are killing one after the other. The more than incompetent police are not able to clear up the situation and so soon everyone is next themselves.

Ultimately, Edgar and Ashley realize that the dolls want to bring their master to life. After Markowitz and his new girlfriend have given their time, they make their way to the family crypt. They manage to destroy the crypt, but Toulon has come to life. He kills Ashley and disappears into the night.

A year later Edgar processed the events of the night in a comic.

background

Producer Dallas Sonnier is a good friend of Charles Band , who owns the rights to the Puppetmaster license. It was agreed that Sonnier and his friend, the director S. Craig Zahler ( Bone Tomahawk ) may make an independent interpretation of the series, while Band continues to hold the rights to the original series.

It's a kind of reboot of the Puppetmaster saga, which takes up familiar elements from the earlier parts, but reworks them a bit. In this way, the puppets, who originally acted against the Nazis, become tools of the same ideology and their French master becomes a homophobic Nazi collaborator. The extremely brutal killing scenes, which were much more harmless in the original series, are also striking. In one of the scenes, for example, a doll cuts itself into the belly of a pregnant woman, cuts open the belly and presents the child to the dying woman. In addition, some character drawings and also murders are anything but politically correct and make fun of various minorities. The effects are largely handmade, so more complex killing sequences turned out to be. There was also hardly any human-doll interaction, as the dolls were not animated due to lack of time and money.

Some guest stars could be engaged for the reboot, such as the German actor Udo Kier as Andre Toulon and the former scream queen Barbara Crampton , who was also seen in the first part of the franchise, as a policewoman. Also Matthias Hues can be seen in a small role.

The two directors Sonny Laguna and Tommy Wiklund previously made a name for themselves in their native Sweden as part of Stockholm Syndrome Film. In their homeland they shot the two splatter and slasher films We Are Monsters and Cabin of the Dead . Puppet Master: The Deadliest Realm is her US debut.

In Germany, the FSK exam failed because of the tough effects. Therefore "no youth clearance" was granted and the independent label Pierrot le Fou turned to the SPIO / JK , which decided on "no serious youth risk". This means that the DVD is released for specialist retailers. There is no cut FSK version.

reception

Due to its tough design and limited availability, the film was received almost exclusively in trendy magazines.

Horrormagazion.de awarded four out of five stars and drew the conclusion “Entertaining, uncomplicated, weird - a must for fans of the series. For everyone else: the Halloween tip for this year. ”Antje Wessels awarded three and a half stars out of five on Filmstarts.de and sums it up:“ The twelfth part of the “Puppet Master” series relies on handmade splatter effects, bare breasts and is surprisingly atmospheric which is also due to an amazingly convincing cast for this genre.
