Franz Quarthal

Franz Quarthal (born October 14, 1943 in Gotha ) is a German historian and held the chair for regional history at the University of Stuttgart from 1990 to 2012 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1963, he studied history , German and Romance languages at the universities of Tübingen , Vienna and Paris . After the state examination in 1968, under the direction of Hansmartin Decker-Hauff, he began to work on a dissertation on the subject of estates and taxation in Swabian Austria , which he completed in the 1973 summer semester.

From 1973 to 1984 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Historical Regional Studies and Historical Auxiliary Sciences at the University of Tübingen. His habilitation thesis from 1982 was entitled Absolutism and Province. Administrative reform and intensification of rule in the Austrian foothills at the time of absolutism . In 1982 he was appointed private lecturer , two years later as C 2 professor on a temporary basis at the University of Tübingen. From 1985 to 1989 he was a Heisenberg fellow of the German Research Foundation .

On April 1, 1989, he was appointed University Professor for Modern History and Bavarian State History at the University of Passau . He turned down a call to the chair for modern history at the University of Vienna in the winter semester 1989/90 in favor of a call to the chair for regional history at the University of Stuttgart, which he had held since September 1990. He retired on October 1st, 2012, his successor is Sabine Holtz .

First of all, the spatial and personnel expansion of the regional history department and the establishment of a library were in the foreground. In his research and teaching, Professor Quarthal devotes himself to the presentation and research of the history of southwest Germany and, embedded in it, the history of Upper Austria within the history of Upper Swabia . In addition to the habilitation thesis, there is also an article, Vorderösterreich, comprising around two hundred pages in the Handbook of Baden-Württemberg History.

Exhibition and museum

Under his direction, the Vorderösterreich-Museum was established in Endingen am Kaiserstuhl in 1997 . In 1999, in cooperation with the Württembergisches Landesmuseum, the state exhibition Front Austria - Only the tail feather of the imperial eagle? in Rottenburg, at the Schallaburg in Lower Austria and in Freiburg im Breisgau. This resulted in the 1999 Cross of Honor for Science and Art of the Republic of Austria (1st class).
