For the first time an international Quidditch tournament was held in 2007 under the name IQA World Cup . However, it was a tournament for club and university teams, held annually by the then International Quidditch Association . Due to the strong centralization and concentration of the association on the USA, a structural reform in the international Quidditch sport took place in 2014: The IQA, founded in 2005, was transformed into a national US umbrella organization and renamed US Quidditch. At the same time, a world association was created with the new International Quidditch Association. The club competition mentioned was last held in 2014 under the name IQA World Cup .

IQA Summer Games (2012)

The first Quidditch World Cup for national teams finally took place on July 8, 2012 in Oxford, England. It also represented the first international Quidditch competition outside of the USA. The tournament was named IQA Summer Games in reference to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London in the same month . As part of the official Olympic torchlight ceremony in Oxford on July 9, 2012, a public demonstration game between the United States and the United Kingdom took place in this context. Five teams participated in the IQA Summer Games: Australia, France, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. The mode included a round robin followed by a knockout phase, for which the best four teams in the preliminary round qualified. By beating France in the final, the US team became the first Quidditch world champion.

IQA Global Games (2014)

The 2014 Quidditch World Cup took place as the IQA Global Games in Burnaby, Canada, but was hosted by the US Quidditch Association. For the first time Mexico and Belgium took part in an international tournament. The seven teams initially played against each other in a round-robin tournament system. Depending on their placements in this Round Robin, they qualified for the placement games for first, third and fifth place. The USA managed to defend their title in the final against Australia, Canada won the bronze medal.

IQA World Cup (since 2016)

After renaming the club competition IQA World Cup in US Quidditch Cup a Quidditch World Cup could take place under the name of national IQA World Cup in 2016 for the first time. The German Quidditch Federation was awarded the contract to host the tournament in Frankfurt am Main. At the same time, the importance of the tournament increased significantly. The Quidditch sport received national attention for the first time in the German press, which led to a sudden increase in Quidditch teams in Germany. The number of participating teams grew from 7 to 21, with Asia and South America also being represented for the first time. For the first time, Germany and Austria also took part in the Quidditch World Cup. The team from Australia won the final against the defending champions from the USA by catching the snitch . In the third edition, this was the first time that the US team was not world champion. The bronze medal went to the Canadian team, who prevailed against the United Kingdom team in the remake of the game for 3rd place in 2014.

The 2018 Quidditch World Cup took place in Florence from June 30th to July 1st, 2018. With 29 participating teams, another record was set. After the same four teams reached the semi-finals in the previous two tournaments, two new teams, Belgium and Turkey, won a medal in 2018. The US team, which faced world champions Australia twice in the course of the tournament and both emerged victorious from the game, was finally able to secure the third title.

Award

The award is made by the International Quidditch Association. Applicants can be national umbrella organizations, individual associations, organizations or local governments or municipalities. Comprehensive documents must be submitted for the application, including information about the sports facilities and accommodation options available. In addition, IQA representatives carry out on-site visits. Since 2018, the organization of the Quidditch World Cup has been awarded together with the three continental championships and thus around a year and a half before the tournament.

qualification

So far, national teams do not have to go through a qualification phase to participate in Quidditch World Cups. However, in order to participate, the teams must represent a regional or national governing body.

In contrast to other sports, players in a national team do not necessarily have to have the corresponding citizenship. Eligible to play for a national team are all players who play Quidditch over a longer period of time in the respective country and are registered as players with the national governing body there.
