The Río Yapacaní is a river in Bolivia , left tributary of the Bolivian Río Grande , and belongs to the river system of the Amazon .
course
The Río Yapacaní has its origins in the Amboró National Park and bears its name from the confluence of the Río Surutú into the Río Alturas del Yapacaní ("Upper Yapacaní"). From this point on, the river flows in a northerly direction and flows into the lower reaches of the Río Grande after 335 kilometers, before it joins the Río Ichilo to the Río Mamoré 110 kilometers further northwest .
The river forms the border between the districts of Municipio San Carlos and Municipio Yapacaní in the province of Ichilo in the department of Santa Cruz . At the mouth of the Surutú are the two cities of Yapacaní and Santa Fe de Yapacaní , which on the one hand benefit from the abundance of fish in the river and on the other hand are threatened by the uncontrolled floods of the tributaries of the Río Yapacaní. In 2005, the dike in the Surutú and Yapacaní river systems began.
The existence of tropical rainforest along the river, especially on its lower reaches, is increasingly threatened by advancing smallholder agrarian colonization , especially in the San Carlos region on the eastern side of the river.
