The RMS Parthia was a combined ship of the British Cunard-White Star Line (from 1949 Cunard Line ) put into service in 1948 , which was in service to New York until 1961 . It was then used as a Remuera for the New Zealand Shipping Company and from 1965 as an Aramac for the Eastern & Australian Steamship Company. In 1969 the ship was sold to Taiwan for demolition .

history

The Parthia was built under hull number 1331 in the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast and was launched on February 25, 1947. After delivery to the Cunard-White Star Line, she took up the liner service from Liverpool to New York on April 10, 1948 . Her sister ship , one year older, was the Media .

The Parthia had as its sister ship, only a passenger compartment of the first class. The actress Katharine Hepburn was one of the prominent guests on board the ships . However, the Parthia , like the Media, was considered a bad seagoing ship, which is why she was equipped with stabilizers from Denny-Brown in 1954. With the emergence of air traffic, the transatlantic service became unprofitable, which is why the Parthia landed for the last time in Liverpool on October 16, 1961 and was subsequently suspended .

In the same year, the ship went under the name Remuera to the New Zealand Shipping Company and began service from London to Auckland in 1962 after conversion work for a larger passenger capacity . However, the Remuera proved to be unprofitable and was therefore retired in 1964.

The Eastern & Australian Steamship Company, a subsidiary of the New Zealand Shipping Company, became the new operator in February 1965. This used the ship as an Aramac on the route from Melbourne to Yokohama before it was finally retired in 1969. In the same year the Aramac went to Kaohsiung for demolition .
