Ra's Siyyan , also Ras Siyan ( Arabic رأس سيان) Is a peninsula and represents the continuation of to Djibouti belonging archipelago of the Seven Brothers Islands in the Strait of Bab al Mandeb between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean is.

geography

The peninsula is located about 20 km southwest of the island of Perim and belongs to the Obock region . The peninsula was originally an island and only gradually became connected to the mainland by a spit . Today the sand strip is approx. 5 km long and 500 to 800 m wide. The Siyyan volcanic cone reaches a height of 138 meters above sea level and extends from south to northwest. It has an extension of approx. 1.2 by 0.5 km. The volcano has pierced a reef that is estimated to be 21,000 years old.

Ras Siyyan with its spit surrounds a shallow lagoon that is approx. 2.5 km wide and is separated from the open sea in the north by coral banks . The bay is lined with mangrove swamps from Avicennia marina ( H̱argayya , Ya'koubta , Afyâ'ouri , Ma'âdib ). An isolated white rock, Rocher Siyyan ( , 55 meters long, 45 meters wide, area almost 2,000 m²), lies in the bay about 800 m southwest of the volcano.

Ras Siyyan is often referred to as the seventh of the Seven Brothers ( Sawabi Islands ). The other brothers are the small islands off the coast. The chain of volcanic mountains continues to the west with the hills Herkalou ( ), Goûlen ( ), Rahra ( ) and 'Oudounta ( ).

Wadi Igiḏ Dabba brings a rare supply of fresh water .

Flora Fauna

In the lagoon there are seagrass meadows made from the seagrasses Halodule (family Cymodoceaceae ) and Thalassia , and in October sharks come to give birth there.
