history

The island of São Miguel was occupied by the Portuguese crown in 1439 . Rabo de Peixe was probably first permanently inhabited by Flemings and Moors from 1490 . After the first settlers lived mainly from grazing livestock, fishing quickly became an important economic factor. Various legends are circulating about the origin of the curious place name, but it is likely that the shape of the headland jutting out into the sea was the starting point.

In 2004 Rabo de Peixe was elevated to a small town ( Vila ).
