Rackspace started as a web host in the late 1990s and is now an IT services provider headquartered in San Antonio , Texas . The company is one of the largest representatives in its industry, customers include or included, for example, GitHub , Vodafone and Mazda . Since August 2008 the company's shares have been traded on the New York Stock Exchange . In November 2016 it was announced that the investment company Apollo Global Management had acquired all shares in the company and that the company's shares were no longer traded on the stock exchange.

history

Rackspace goes back to the company Cymitar Technology Group , which was founded in 1996 by Richard Yoo . It dealt with the development of websites and other web-based applications. Due to the increasing demand in the field of web hosting , Rackspace began two years later under the leadership of Graham Weston as a spin-off with the operation of dedicated servers for customers of the Cymitar Technology Group. In 2009, the company received $ 11.5 million in funding that included Sequoia Capital and Red Hat .

In March 2006, Rackspace founded a subsidiary called Mosso , which was fully bought back in 2008. The core of the offer was a platform on which websites could be hosted without having to worry about the necessary technical infrastructure and especially about scaling . Mosso was subsequently discontinued as an independent brand and formed the basis for the Rackspace Cloud , which competes with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Windows Azure . In 2010, Rackspace, together with NASA , Dell and Citrix, launched the open source project OpenStack , which aims to provide an open source platform for cloud computing . Rackspace later transferred the management of the OpenStack project to a foundation. Starting in mid-2012, all Rackspace Cloud services were gradually converted to OpenStack, starting with the servers .

Products

Rackspace initially only offered dedicated servers and expanded its range with the acquisition of Mosso to include the so-called Rackspace Cloud . This mainly consists of cloud servers (virtual servers), cloud sites (web applications), cloud files (storage service) and cloud databases (databases) as well as various offers for administration and configuration. This included services for the domain name system and virtual networks, especially load balancers . The so-called private cloud is offered as a variant of the Rackspace Cloud . This is hardware and software that was coordinated by Rackspace and is intended for operation in its own data center .

In contrast to other providers, Rackspace attaches great importance to its customer service , which is referred to as fanatical support , instead of the technology of its products . Rackspace operates multiple data centers in different regions around the world, including Dallas , Chicago , Northern Virginia, London , Hong Kong and Sydney . In November 2016, the company announced that it would set up its first data center in Germany ( Frankfurt ) in 2017 in order to comply with the stricter data protection regulations in the Germany, Austria and Switzerland region.

criticism

Rackspace came under fire in 2009 after the server and cloud services in the company's largest data center in Dallas at the time had failed several times. The uninterruptible power supply was not started as intended several times. Numerous popular online services , including Tumblr, were affected by the outage . As a result of the failures, the CEO announced that he would review the entire technical infrastructure. Rackspace also reimbursed its customers for a total of approximately $ 3.5 million in fees.
