Rafael Barraza Sánchez (born October 24, 1928 in Durango ; † July 26, 2020 there ) was a Mexican clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Mazatlán .

Life

Rafael Barraza Sánchez entered the minor seminary in Durango at the age of 11 and studied philosophy and theology at the major seminary in Durango. In 1948 he became a member of the Pontifical North America College in Rome and completed a doctoral degree in theology at the Gregorian University . He received in the October 28, 1951 Cathedral of Durango the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Durango by Bishop José María González y Valencia. He was prefect of studies and vice-rector of the minor seminary and professor of theology at the seminary in Durango. In addition, he was from 1956 to 1981 chaplain to the poor school sisters . In 1974 he became an honorary canon of Durango Cathedral and a member of the cathedral chapter.

Pope John Paul II named him titular bishop of Drivastum and auxiliary bishop in Durango on October 26, 1979 . The Archbishop of Durango, Antonio López Aviña , donated him episcopal ordination on January 25, 1980 ; Co- consecrators were Miguel García Franco , Bishop of Mazatlán, and Arturo Antonio Szymanski Ramírez , Bishop of Tampico .

On October 19, 1981, he was appointed Bishop of Mazatlán. On March 3, 2005, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
