Raimonda Murmokaitė (born July 17, 1959 ) is a Lithuanian diplomat . In February 2014 and May 2015 she was President of the UN Security Council .

career path

Murmokaitė studied German and Romance languages at the University of Vilnius from 1977 to 1982 . With a Muskie - scholarship she graduated from 1992 to 1993, a study of administrative sciences at the Monterey Institute of International Studies . She then received a Chevening Scholarship and continued her education in diplomacy and security policy at the University of Birmingham .

Murmokaitė was employed by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in March 1994 . After working as a consultant, she took over the management of the Western European department in January 1996 . In January 1998, Murmokaitė moved to the Lithuanian embassy in Italy before heading into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' political planning department in February 2001. From April 2003 to August 2004 she was Director of America , Africa , Asia and Oceania .

Between August 2004 and July 2008, Murmokaitė was the deputy of Gediminas Šerkšnys and Dalius Čekuolis at the Permanent Mission of Lithuania to the United Nations in New York . In August 2008 Murmokaitė was appointed ambassador and worked for Foreign Ministers Petras Vaitiekūnas and Vygaudas Ušackas . In October 2009 she became Director of the Department for the United Nations, International Organizations and Human Rights at the Ministry.

Murmokaitė was accredited as Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations in October 2012 . She was the first Lithuanian to hold this post and twice presided over the United Nations Security Council during her five-year term. On August 18, 2017, Audra Plepytė succeeded her, and Murmokaitė became director of the Transatlantic Cooperation and Security Policy Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs .
