Raimund Oehler

Raimund Oehler (born May 23, 1852 in Halle (Saale) ; † August 11, 1935 in Michelsberg near Bamberg ) was a German ancient historian and teacher.

Raimund Oehler was the son of the classical philologist Franz Oehler (1817–1866), who had taught at the Latin secondary school in Halle since 1845. After the death of his father, Raimund Oehler grew up with his mother Alexandrine nee. Sussmann up. He attended Latin secondary school until his final exams on August 3, 1871 and then studied Classical Philology and German Studies in Halle and Göttingen . He belonged to the Germanic seminar under Julius Zacher and the philological seminar under Heinrich Keil . Keil also supervised Oehler's dissertation, a collection of fragments by the late antique poet Tiberianus . In this work, Oehler received advice and support from the Frankfurt philologist Alexander Riese , who made his extensive private library available to the student. on October 21, 1879 Oehler was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate , on January 10, 1881 he passed the teaching examination in the subjects Greek, Latin and German.

From Easter 1881, Oehler worked as a substitute teacher at the Realschule and the Progymnasium in Homburg , where he was promoted to full teacher after three years. On April 1, 1885, he moved to the Royal Cadet Institute in Lichterfelde near Berlin , where he was later appointed high school professor. Oehler spent his old age in the Michelsberg retirement home near Bamberg .

During his time in Berlin, Oehler continued his scientific studies alongside his classes. His main research interests were ancient military history and topography , especially the Punic Wars . Oehler wrote several individual studies, reviews and articles for Pauly's real encyclopedia of classical antiquity (RE) as well as auxiliary books for teaching. Since 1899 he was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
