The Rainbow was an American three-masted ship .

She was launched in New York on January 22, 1845 as the first real clipper for the New York shipping company Howland & Aspinwall. It was designed by ship designer John Willis Griffiths (1809-1882) for the first time based on a calculated model and test in the towing tank .

Their length-to-width ratio was 5: 1. Clippers with this or higher rating were referred to as extreme clippers, those with ratings below that as medium clippers. It had a white circumferential band around the hull and indicated gun ports to deter pirates who could be encountered in the China Sea after passing the Sunda Strait .

The Rainbow made under Captain John country three trips to Hong Kong / Canton via the Cape of Good Hope and back from tea port Whampoa (Ch. Huangpou), eastern. Of Canton (early. Kwantung, chin. Guangzhou), province of Guangdong , China , after New York. On her maiden voyage , she lost her three Bramstengen in the South Atlantic . After arriving in Hong Kong, Captain Land had the stanchions re- rigged, shortened by 1 m, due to over- rigging . Originally rigged with simple Marts, simple Bram and Royal sails (4 square sails on the mast), she then had split topsails . The tea freight covered the cost of building the ship and raised an additional $ 45,000. The second trip home took 79 days, a record drive.

Captain Hayes took over the ship in 1847 and took it to Canton on its fourth tea voyage. On her fifth trip from New York to Canton via Valparaíso , she got lost in the Cape Horn region.
