Rakovica ( Serbian - Cyrillic Раковица ) is a municipality in Belgrade .
The name Rakovica is first mentioned in 1560 in the Turkish census as the village of Vlaha. According to tradition, the place got its name after the crabs (rak = cancer), the inhabitants of the river that rippled through the settlement. Until 1952, Rakovica belonged to different rayons and from 1952 to 1960 was a municipality of its own. Since 1960, Rakovica has belonged to the Čukarica district and from 1974 it became an independent municipality.
The city festival is celebrated on October 14th , the day of the protective mantle Madonna in the Gregorian calendar .
