The Raná (German Rannayer Berg , 457 m) is a striking mountain in the so-called Launer part of the Bohemian Central Mountains (České středohoří) in the Czech Republic . The Raná National Nature Reserve has existed on the south side since 1936 . The Raná is the center of paragliding in Northern Bohemia .

Origin of the name

The mountain got its name after the nearby village of Raná (Rannay) .

Location and surroundings

The Raná is located about six kilometers north of Louny ( Laun ) and 10 kilometers southeast of Most ( Brüx ) in the Bohemian Central Mountains on the left Elbe. Immediately at the foot of the mountain is the homonymous community Raná ( Ranay ) and the small district of Hrádek ( Hradek ). Neighboring mountains are the Lenešický Chlum , the Oblík ( Hoblik ) and the Milá ( Millayer ).

Until 1945/46 the language border between German and Czech populated areas ran along the Raná. After the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany in the autumn of 1938, however, the Raná was entirely on German territory , and the new state border was established immediately south of the Raná.

natural reserve

European ground squirrel

Since 1936 the south side of the mountain has been under state protection on 1.5 hectares as a nature reserve. In 1951 the area was declared a national nature reserve. Recently the reserve was expanded to 10.94 hectares.

Protected plants typical of the Raná include: a. the pasqueflower ( Pulsatilla patens ), the endemic Bohemian meadow anemone ( Pulsatilla pratensis bohemica ), the real feather grass ( Stipa pennata ) and the steppe Wild Oats ( Avenastrum desertorum ).

The occurrence of the European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) on the Raná is unique. This rodent from the family of the squirrel has its main distribution area in the steppes of Southeast Europe; at Raná the ground squirrel lives at its absolute northern population limit. Another occurrence that is now extinct was only known from the Eastern Ore Mountains until the 1950s .

Gliding

Paraglider pilots on Raná

Even during the times of socialism , the paramilitary association SVAZARM developed the Raná into a center for gliding . Since the political change in 1989, the wide, forest-free slopes can be used by everyone as a starting point.

Paths to the summit

A blue- marked hiking route leads over the Raná, which starts in Most and continues over the Milá and Lenešice to Louny. The summit can be reached via a marked junction. The places Raná and Lenešice are good starting points for a visit to the mountain.
