distribution

The pasque flower has a very large distribution area, which extends from Central Europe via Russia and Western Siberia to North America. It can be found on sandy and semi- arid lawns and in dry pine forests. In Central Europe it is a character species of the Pyrolo-Pinetum from the Cytiso-Pinion association, but also occurs in societies of the Cirsio-Brachypodion association.

In Germany the species is considered "critically endangered" and is accordingly on the red list . Today it only occurs in a few locations in the Bavarian Alpine Foreland ( Garchinger Heide , Truderinger Wald, Neustadt an der Donau, Kelheim). Former deposits in Brandenburg (near Guben ) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ( Rothemühl ) have expired.
