Random Lake is located in southeast Wisconsin, around the lake of the same name. The west bank of Lake Michigan is around 15 km away.

The four-lane Wisconsin State Highway 57 runs in a north-south direction along the eastern parish boundary of Random Lake. Wisconsin State Highway 144 forms the northern parish boundary. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
Random Lake runs parallel to WIS 57 on a freight railway line for the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad (WSOR).

The first white immigrants came to the region in 1840 and founded the settlement. In 1850, the Town of Sherman was established as the next higher administrative unit. In 1872 the settlement was connected to the railway network. In the year Random Lake was removed from the town and incorporated as the Village of Random Lake .
