Ranking Joe (previously also: Little Joe , actually: Joseph Jackson ; * July 1, 1959 in Kingston (Jamaica) ) is a Jamaican reggae musician and deejay .

Career

Born as Joseph Jackson, the musician already had his first experience as a deejay at Sound Systems when Coxsone Dodd took him under his wing in the mid-1970s and hired the young, U-Roy- inspired musician for his sound system El Paso Hi-fi . Under his first stage name Little Joe , he recorded his debut single Gun Court in Dodds Studio One in 1975 . Then he worked with various other producers , founded his own sound system together with U-Roy and called himself Ranking Joe from then on . From the late 1970s, Weakheart Fade Away , Dub It in a Dance , Saturday Night Jamdown Syle and Round the World brought out a number of their own albums, and also began to work as a producer himself.

In the early 1980s, Ranking Joe became popular outside of Jamaica after a UK tour with the Ray Symbolic Hi-Fi Sound System. Despite some success, the sound system broke up again and Ranking Joe devoted himself more to producing. He worked for King Tubby as one of the producers involved in Dangerous Dub . After moving to New York , Joe made recordings for Frankie Paul , Black Uhuru , Dennis Brown , Glen Washington , Glen Brown , The Meditations , King Tubby, Shinehead and Papa San, among others . In the 1990s and 2000s Ranking Joe recorded his own songs again and released other solo albums with Fast Forward to Africa and Ghetto People .

In 2014 he took part in the piece Take Your Place on the album Steady by the Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, which landed a number 1 hit on Billboard's Reggae Album Charts.
