Rasmus C. Effersøe

Rasmus Christoffer Effersøe , occasionally also written Effersø (born May 30, 1857 in Tvøroyri / Faroe Islands , † March 23, 1916 ) was a Faroese poet, politician and newspaper editor . Alongside Jóannes Patursson, he is considered the leading figure in the Faroese national movement.

Life

Rasmus Effersøe was born in 1857 as the son of Sýslumaður by Suðuroy Gudmund Effersøe and his wife Kathrina in Tvøroyri. After school he went to study in Denmark and Sweden and passed the farmer's exam in 1879 . He was an agricultural advisor from 1889 until his death.

Effersøe played a special role at the Faroe Islands Christmas meeting in 1888 . In the history of the Faroe Islands , his performance of the hymn Nú er tann stundin ... by the young Jóannes Patursson (who was too shy to perform it himself) marked the beginning of a new era. The national awakening led to the adoption of the Faroese language in all areas and ultimately the autonomy of 1948.

It was Effersøe who, together with Patursson, called another meeting at the beginning of January 1889, at which the language and cultural society " Føringafelag " was founded. In the same year Rasmus Effersøe wrote his first play, which is often referred to as the first Faroese play. However, the play by Helena Patursson was published in the same year , of which only fragments have survived. In January 1890 he became head of the newly founded paper " Føringatíðindi " , the first Faroese-language newspaper ever. The monthly newspaper was published by "Føringafelag". Before that, he worked as an editor at Dimmalætting from 1886 to 1889 and again from 1902 to 1905. From 1899 to 1900 and from 1910 to 1915 he was editor-in-chief of the newspaper Dúgvan .

Effersøe was a member of the Løgting from 1897 to 1901 , at a time when there were no political parties. A bust of him stands on the lawn in front of the parliament building and is therefore known to every visitor to the Faroe Islands. The monument was unveiled at Ólavsøka ( the opening of parliament on July 29) in 1933. Effersøe's nephew Edward Mitens , who campaigned for the monument to be erected, gave the speech. A Faroese trawler is named after RC Effersøe and has its home port in Tvøroyri. On May 19, 2008 Rasmus C. Effersøe will be honored with a stamp from Postverk Føroya .

family

Rasmus Effersøe was the son of Kathrina Elisabeth Helena, b. Müller from Tórshavn and Sýslumaður Gudmund Christie Laurentius Isholm Effersøe (1827–1916) from Tvøroyri. His father, Jón Guðmundsson Effersøe (1784–1866), came to the Faroe Islands as an immigrant from Iceland . The Danish surname Effersø goes back to the former Icelandic island of Örfirisey in Kollafjörður , which is now firmly connected to Reykjavík by an embankment .

The younger brother of Rasmus was Oliver Effersøe , from 1894 to 1920 Sýslumaður in Tvøroyri and as co-founder and temporary chairman of Sambandsflokkurin one of the political opponents of Jóannes Patursson . The Faroese teacher, politician and newspaper editor Oliver Petræus Effersøe , on the other hand, was his father's younger brother.
