The Blieskastel town hall is the town hall of the city of Blieskastel in Saarland . It was built as an orphanage in the 1870s , but it also served administrative purposes from the start . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the building is a single monument listed.

history

Imperial Count Franz Karl von der Leyen had the orphanage in Blieskastel built for the poor and orphans of his dominion. The establishment went back to a foundation of the regent from the year 1765. After the Leyen residence was moved from Koblenz to Blieskastel in 1773, this poor and orphanage foundation received further funding from Franz Karl. As part of this funding, he had the spacious orphanage building built between 1773 and 1775. At that time it was considered the largest and most handsome foundation building in the Rhine district. After the Count's death in 1775, the work was continued by his widow Marianne von der Leyen .

The orphanage, today's Blieskastel town hall, is considered to be the work of the Pfalz-Zweibrücken master builder Christian Ludwig Hautt .

The building was a multi-purpose building in which, in addition to the orphanage, which managed the orphanage, the so-called "landscape" , the representative body of the places in the Blieskastel district, was housed. The building belonged to the landscape. As an orphanage, it was not only a social institution, but also served as an “Oberamtshaus” as an official building. The barracks of the Hoch-Graeflich Leyenschen Guard Company were located in an annex . A market hall also belonged to the building .

From the orphan's fund founded by Count Franz Karl, money could still be paid out to those in need until 1918, until the rest was consumed by inflation .

In the centuries after it was built, the orphanage was often used as a military hospital and was requisitioned by the rulers . After severe war damage in 1944, the destroyed front was restored by the local sculptor Joachim Kirsch in the 1950s.

Building description

The building with a long rectangular floor plan and two storeys with a mansard hipped roof does not have its façade on the long sides, but on the southern narrow side. Its center is emphasized by a slender portal , a balcony on massive consoles and a triangular gable rising over three of five axes . A figure of Justitia stands above him . Two vases are placed above the corner pilasters . In the center of the richly relief gable you can see Leyen's coat of arms in front of a textile ornament . The coat of arms is held by two male greyhounds with collars and wings decorated with hearts. Above is a crown, including the order cross of a Grand Commander of the Imperial Order of St. Joseph. To the side there are cornucopia with money and flowers. On a lion's skin that is pinned to the entablature below, you can see a chronogram from 1775. On it is written: "eCCe Ita pro aeqVo et bono VIgILat atqVe Laborat franCIsCVs regnans CoMes a petra et In HohengeroLseCk." (German: "See," so cares for the just and the good and works Franz, the ruling Count von der Leyen and Hohengerolseck. ")

The western long side of the building facing Paradeplatz, as well as the eastern side, has a rich sandstone structure with pilasters and cranked cornice , square and plinth. The windows have a simple lintel with a wedge. In the middle of the 17 axes is a portal that corresponds in size and shape to the main portal on the front side. To the left and right, separated by four axes, there are wider portals with a basket arch . These used to be gate entrances. The former market hall, a vestibule with a flat ceiling and four pillars on which basket arches rest, has also been preserved. Their keystones alternately show the Leyensche coat of arms and animal heads.
