Up Denktaş

Rauf Raif Denktaş , in German media mostly Denktash (in English-language media Denktash * 27. January 1924 in Paphos , Cyprus ; † 13. January 2012 in Lefkoşa , TRNC ) was a Turkish Cypriot politicians . He was Vice President of the Republic of Cyprus from 1973 to 1974 and President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus from 1983 to 2005 .

Life

Denktaş was trained as a barrister at Lincoln's Inn in London . He had been part of the political leadership of the Turkish part of the population in Cyprus since the 1950s . Between 1964 and 1968 he was prevented from entering the island by the Greek-dominated political leadership of the Republic of Cyprus, which has been independent since 1960 . After the de facto partition of the island in 1974, he proclaimed the Turkish federal state of Cyprus in 1975 and was president of this republic until 1983. In 1983 he declared the independence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and from 1983 to 2005 he was elected President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus , which has not received any international recognition to this day. In the efforts to reunify the island, which had been intensified in the run-up to the EU accession of the Republic of Cyprus, Denktaş was seen as a brake, who insisted on extensive autonomy for Northern Cyprus. He made his remaining in office dependent on the outcome of the referendum on the UN plan ( Annan plan ) on April 24, 2004. After this plan was approved by a large majority by the people of Northern Cyprus, he announced that he would not run in the presidential elections in April 2005. In May 2011 he suffered a stroke . He was treated at the clinic of the University of the Middle East north of Nicosia, but then died of multiple organ failure in mid-January 2012 at the age of 87 .

His son Serdar is also politically active.
