Ray Staszak (born December 1, 1962 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is a former American ice hockey player who played four games for the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger during his active career between 1981 and 1986 has denied.

Career

Staszak played during his junior years until 1983 in the United States Hockey League before he moved to the University of Illinois at Chicago and played for their ice hockey team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his second year there he collected 72 points in 38 games and was named CCHA Player of the Year.

After two outstanding years at the university, the undrafted free agent was available to the National Hockey League franchises in the summer of 1985 , of which 21 of the 22 teams competed for his services. The troubled Detroit Red Wings finally secured the services of the striker and had him sign a $ 1.3 million four-year contract, which at the time was an NHL record for both free agents and rookies . In the same approach, the Red Wings had secured the services of college players Tim Friday and Dale Krentz in advance , in the hope of starting a successful new beginning with the three unfinished rough diamonds.

The Red Wings plan did not work out, however. Staszak played only four NHL games for Detroit at the beginning of the 1985/86 season before management sent him to the farm team Adirondack Red Wings in the American Hockey League . There the attacker came to 26 more missions before a groin injury put him out of action. Although Staszak returned to the team in the play-offs and won the Calder Cup with the team . However, the persistent problems with the groin forced him to end his career afterwards.
