Rebellion Developments Ltd. is a British computer game - developer based in Oxford . In 2000 the company also acquired the British comic series 2000 AD , which it has been publishing ever since.
Company history
The company was founded in 1991 by brothers Jason and Chris Kingsley. The most successful titles in the early years were in 1994 for the console Atari Jaguar published game Alien vs Predator and Aliens vs. Predator for Windows - PCs in the year 1999th
In June 2000, the company bought the rights to the British comic series 2000 AD and all of its characters, including Judge Dredd . Since then, however, Rebellion has only developed a few games based on the 2000 AD license. Kingsley justified this in an interview with a lack of developer capacities.
In 2001 the company was a founding member of TIGA , an association of independent game developers in Great Britain. Jason Kingsley is now the association's vice chairman.
In May 2004, the company licensed the publishing rights to material from 2000 AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine for North America to the American comic publisher DC Comics . In the summer of 2006, Abaddon Books was founded, its own book imprint , which mainly publishes science fiction and fantasy novels.
In the years 2006 to 2008 the company expanded and took over several other developers. First they bought Strangelite , an in-house development studio from Empire Interactive . In June 2006, Rebellion took over the staff and facilities of the well-known development studio Core Design (known as the developer of the Tomb Raider game series ) from the owner SCi Entertainment . The name Core Design and the intellectual property of the Core Design games remained with the publisher Eidos . The studio was renamed Rebellion Derby. At the end of 2007, the development studio Awesome Developments from the developer Ignition Entertainment was the next acquisition, whereby the company grew to around 280 employees. The Banbury- based studio had previously developed several games for the PlayStation Portable game console .
In July 2008, the company took over the English developer Razorworks , another in-house development studio from Empire Interactive, after the studio was under acute threat of closure. The 30 employees of the studio were integrated into the Oxford studio.
The "Develop 100" list of the top-selling developers published by the games industry magazine Develop listed Rebellion as the most successful independent developer studio and the 16th most successful studio in the world with sales of £ 20.13 million . The data collected by Chart-Track and ELSPA for this list is based on sales in the United Kingdom only .
In 2009 the company acquired the rights to the Ground Control , Evil Genius , Empire Earth and Lords of Magic game series from Vivendi Universal and announced that it would develop sequels to these series.
In early August 2013, the company officially announced the new game Evil Genius Online. The title appears for Facebook and Zynga.com.
In July 2017, Rebellion announced Evil Genius 2 as the successor to Evil Genius.
