Sniper Elite III is a tactical third-person shooter - Stealth - video game , that of Rebellion Developments was developed and published. The game is a prequel to its predecessor Sniper Elite V2 , which was released in 2012, and is the third part of the Sniper Elite series.

Sniper Elite III is set about three years before the events of V2 after the Office of Strategic Services officer Karl Fairburne learned of a secret miracle weapon programmed by the Nazis while participating in the North Africa conflict during World War II .

Gameplay

The game retains and builds on the mechanics of Sniper Elite V2 . Players progress through large battlefield maps based on the North Africa conflict.

The sniper rifle is the player's main weapon, but additional weapons are also available, including submachine guns and pistols , silenced or not depending on the situation . In addition to hand grenades , the player can use tripwire booby traps , land mines and dynamite . The binoculars can be used to mark enemies and show their position and movements. The player character has to hold his breath to aim the shot correctly. A red icon appears in the area, marking the projected point of impact. There are weapon parts scattered throughout the game and found while looting dead enemies, so players can customize their weapons in the menu before using them; the menu also allows equipment to be loaded.

The stealth mechanics have been reworked. An eye icon will blink or pop up to indicate the player's recognition level by the enemy. Enemy soldiers will also have a circle counter above their head to indicate the alarm status. Players will also be forced to move regularly to prevent detection with a white ghosting to mark their last known location, and the enemy will search a larger area. As in the previous game, loud noises can be used to mask sniper shots.

A point system is set up for actions such as stealth close combat or sniper kills, with the points accumulating for advancement to higher ranks. Players can walk around the map to collect special reward items like collector cards and unlock sniper nests. The journal pages also provide additional background information on the events of the game.

V2's X-Ray kill cam system is also retained. While the previous game only shows the internal structure of the body at the point of impact, the new game expands to visualize the rest of the cardiovascular, skeletal and muscular systems. The player can still target vehicles, but now has the option to shoot down the engines and deactivate the vehicle.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer mode in Sniper Elite III consists of 5 modes for competitive gameplay. Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, Distance King, No Cross and Capture the flag.

action

In June 1942, during the Battle of Gazala , the SOE sniper Karl Fairburne (Tom Clarke-Hill) was sent to assassinate General Franz Vahlen and to expose his top-secret project. He helps British soldiers repel General Erwin Rommel's forces , but the port of Tobruk is ultimately lost. Fairburne goes to the Gaberoune oasis in Libya to kill several officers and to determine Vahlen's whereabouts. All he finds is one document that reveals the name of Vahlen's Project Epidemic. The Long Range Desert Group asks Fairburne for assistance in the destruction of several Flak 88 in the Halfaya Pass .

Fairburne's only hope of finding Vahlen is to rescue a British informant at Fort Rifugio who was previously held by the British during Operation Compass . Fairburne successfully infiltrates Fort Rifugio and frees the informant. The man, brewer, shares information about officers meeting in the Siwa Oasis in western Egypt. Fairburne, whose snipers earned him the label desert spirit of the Germans, sneaks into town and finds out that the officers want to betray Vahlen to Hitler by giving him the general's personal diary in Berlin . Fairburne kills the officer hired as courier and steals the book in which Vahlen's plans to conquer Europe in the victory of the Africa Corps in North Africa with his base of operations somewhere in the Kasserine Pass are listed.

Fairburne and Brewer infiltrate the base and discover on a secret reel of film that Project Epidemic is a super tank, code-named Rat . Tragically, Brauer is killed by a tiger tank , but Fairburne destroys him in revenge. He buries Brauer and takes a cartridge from Brauer's rifle. Since the location of the rat production facility is still unknown, Fairburne, together with the LRDG, attacks the Pont du Fahs airfield, which is controlled by Germany , and finds a map that leads to the facility, which is located in the Mides Canyon. He penetrates the complex and prepares satchel loads to bring down the base and destroy the prototype rat. To trigger the detonation, Fairburne places an explosive on the rat's tower and drops a load of the super tank's massive shells on it. Vahlen is fatally wounded trying to escape the hangar and Fairburne takes his Luger, puts Brauer's cartridge in the chamber, and kills Vahlen before he can leave the base.

A voiceover from Fairburne during the closing credits shows that the information he acquired on the rat will enable the USAAF and RAF to start the Battle of the Ruhr. The impact of Operation Chastise on steel production forces the Germans to scrap work on the rat.

reception

Sniper Elite III received mixed reviews from Metacritics when it was released .

Hardcore Gamer's Matt Whittaker gave the game a 3/5, writing, “While its stealth-based sniping gameplay can offer some exciting moments, Sniper Elite III is a decidedly mixed bag. Its cryptic narrative, outdated mission design, boring protagonist, and weak non-campaign modes overshadow everything that does it well. "Tyler Wilde of PC Gamer scored the game 70/100, writing," Some of the flaws in Sniper Elite 3 are funny [...] and some frustrating, but the ideas are good and I hope they don't end there. [...] Realistically we have to wait for Sniper Elite 4 to achieve a significant improvement. "

IGN's Mikel Reparaz scored 8.2 / 10 for the game, writing: "Sniper Elite III is more than just a showcase for slow-motion gore. It shines with its open approach to stealth." Reparaz didn't like the "skeleton" story and the "shaky" artificial intelligence, but spoke positively about the large levels, the "gripping" gore and the freedom to develop different and varied tactics.

GamesRadar's David Roberts gave the game a 3 out of 5. He also praised the large environments for making strategic play possible, but said the kill cam, while a cool feature, "quickly loses its appeal". Roberts particularly enjoyed the feeling of getting a perfect shot from a mile away and saying it "never gets old". Roberts' main problems with the game included a "general lack of polish" as well as "flat narrative" and "generic goals". "Sniper Elite 3 certainly has some exciting moments," said Roberts, "whether you're blissfully chasing unsuspecting soldiers or being chased by countersnipers in ghillie suits, but there are too many technical and narrative problems to simply ignore."

Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead wrote in his review: "The package as a whole is still a diamond in the rough, but it's a marked improvement over its predecessor. The gruesome kill cam remains a deliciously false thrill and the unifying force that holds the game together. " , but it's doubtful that reworking the rifts in a fourth game would be enough without a major overhaul of the AI and physics code. Despite its shortcomings, Sniper Elite 3 is a hugely entertaining mid-range action game that may not hit the mark, but it gets closer with every shot. "Whitehead gave the game a 7/10.

Game Informer's Tim Turi wrote: "I openly admit that I love bloody kills and acting out the hero-sniper fantasy, but Sniper Elite III only partially fulfills the latter. When you're looking at dramatic, translucent footage of enemies caught by sniper fire Getting shredded, unable to get enough, Sniper Elite III has you covered in spades. If you're interested in more motivation beyond the glory of killing, look elsewhere ”. Turin scored 6.5 / 10 for the game and had mixed feelings about the graphics, sound, kill cam, and controls.

GameSpot's Josiah Renaudin gave the game a 6/10. Renaudin disliked the balance between snipers (which he praised) and stealth, saying stealth was boring and outlived the greeting. Renaudin called the slow-motion kill camera "devilishly satisfying" and praised the colorful surroundings as an improvement on the previous games. Although Renaudin thought the story was "uninspired" and didn't like online matchmaking as "broken", he ended up praising the level design for promoting creativity.
