Sir Reginald Aylmer Ranfurly Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax KCB , DSO , (born Plunkett , born August 28, 1880 in St. Marylebone , London , † October 16, 1967 in Poole , Dorset ) was a British admiral .

Life

He was the second of three sons of John Plunkett, 17th Baron Dunsany , from his marriage to Ernle Burton. His older brother was the writer Edward Plunkett, 18th Baron Dunsany (1878-1957).

He began a career as an officer in the Royal Navy in 1896 . In 1912 he was promoted to commander . He served in the European naval theaters of World War I and was promoted to captain in 1916 .

After his mother's death, he inherited extensive estates including Charborough House in Dorset , Ellerton Priory in North Yorkshire and Drax Hall in Barbados . He then changed his family name on October 4, 1916 with a royal license from "Plunkett" to "Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax".

From 1923 to 1924 he was President of the Inter-Allied Marine Control Commission in the Weimar Republic . From 1924 to 1932 he was a member of Dorset County Council . In 1928 he was promoted to Rear Admiral , in 1932 to Vice Admiral and in 1936 to Admiral. In 1928 he was named Companion of the Order of the Bath and in 1934 he was made Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath.

In the run-up to the German-Soviet non-aggression pact (1939), he and the French General Aimé Doumenc stayed in the Soviet Union in the summer of 1939 as the negotiators of a joint British and French delegation . From 1943 to 1945 he was a convoy commodore .

He was married and had four daughters and one son. The politician Richard Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax (* 1958) is his grandson.
