The Regional Gymnasium Laufental-Thierstein has existed since 1969 in the Swiss municipality of Laufen BL . It combines the progymnasiale with the Gymnasiale level under one roof.
Building the school
The regional grammar school Laufental-Thierstein has existed since 1969. The school, which was supported by two cantons from the beginning (formerly Bern and Solothurn , today Basel-Landschaft and Solothurn), was initially designed as a lower grammar school , but was soon expanded into a full grammar school. So that the two cantons can continue to shape a common school policy, an amendment to the Education Act (repeal of Section 110, secondary schools in Laufental and amendment to Section 28) was necessary in 2010. Otherwise, the "contract between the cantons of Solothurn and Basel-Landschaft, which was concluded on 1.1.2002 and provides for joint management of both level P of lower secondary level and the grammar school at the regional grammar school Laufental-Thierstein" would have been canceled. There were repeated inquiries at canton level regarding the school and cantonal cooperation. Today the regional grammar school Laufental-Thierstein connects the progymnasium with the grammar school level under one roof and with a single school management . The Matura department is federally recognized; the certificates therefore entitle you to study at all Swiss universities .
The school is currently attended by around 600 students from the Laufental valley in Basel and Thierstein in Solothurn .
Cooperation with the Porrentruy grammar school
We have worked closely with the Lycée Cantonal de Porrentruy since 2011. If the students choose the main subjects biology / chemistry or economics / law, they can attend the other grammar school for two years, after which the students graduate with the federally recognized bilingual Matura. Lessons are held in smaller classes than usual (a maximum of 20 students), and each student is assigned a foreign language learning partner for the entire four years. 20 to 30 percent of the lessons are in the respective foreign language; Mathematics, geography and gymnastics / sports are taught in French in Laufen.

Basic subjects
The basic subjects in the Progymnasium as well as in the Gymnasium are German, French, English , geography , history , economics and law (in the fourth semester of the Gymnasium), mathematics , biology , chemistry , physics , visual design, music and sport .
Core subjects
Progymnasium
In the fifth semester of the Progymnasium one of the three main subjects Applications of Mathematics , Italian or Latin must be chosen, which are taught four lessons per week. The chosen major cannot be changed until the eighth (and last) semester of the Progymnasium.
high school
In the grammar school one of ten main subjects must be chosen. These are applications of mathematics and physics, biology and chemistry, Greek, Italian, Latin , music , Russian, Spanish, economics and law and artistic design , but the subjects Greek, music and Russian are not offered at the regional grammar school Laufental-Thierstein. Pupils who choose these subjects are forwarded to the other grammar schools in the canton of Basel-Landschaft.
Admission requirements (Progymnasium)
The Progymnasium starts after the 6th grade of primary school . All pupils who are recommended by their primary school teacher in the 6th grade are provisionally admitted to the first grade of the Progymnasium. The trial period lasts one year. Parents of children who do not receive the recommendation can request an entrance examination .
