  • The 1897 Reichsrat election was held in Cisleithanien in March 1897 .

    Electoral system

Since 1873 was in Cisleithania a class franchise . The voters were divided into four classes according to their status and wealth: large landowners, chambers of commerce and trade, large and medium-sized farmers and all other male citizens living in cities who paid at least 10 guilders per year (five guilders from 1882) direct taxes. This corresponded to a total of 6% of the adult population.

    Election result

The elections fundamentally changed the balance of power in the cisleithan parliament . The German Progressive Party suffered a severe defeat at the expense of the successes of the German People's Party and the Christian Social Party .

After the elections, the three strongest electoral alliances ( Young Czechs (60 seats), Polenklub (59), German Progressive Party (49)) had 168 seats. The new Reichsrat consisted of a total of 17 parliamentary groups. The position of the Social Democrats remained weak with 15 seats.
