Reiner Blumentritt on Hohle Fels , 2018

Reiner Blumentritt (born September 30, 1943 in Orlamünde ; † December 8, 2019 in Ehingen ) was a German local politician and hobby archaeologist .

education and profession

After training as a toolmaker and further training as an industrial master, Blumentritt worked as a production and operations manager .

He from 1984 to 1994, and from 1999 until his death a member of the CDU - Municipal Group in Schelklingen and since 2009 deputy mayor of the town.

Voluntary archaeological activity

Even as a schoolboy, Blumentritt developed a great interest in prehistory and early history after he came across a 600-year-old clay figure while working in the garden. He accompanied the local researcher Gertraud Matschak on prospecting at the Helga-Abri in the Ach Valley near Schelklingen and in the cave Hohle Fels , which had been completely excavated since the end of the 19th century . The finds recovered in the process were decisive for archaeological excavations, which were carried out at both sites between 1958 and 1960 under the direction of Gustav Riek . As an excavation assistant, Blumentritt also supported Riek's excavations in the eyeglass cave and drew attention to the archaeological relevance of the Geißenklösterle through his own findings .

At Blumentritt's insistence, further probes were carried out in the Hohle Fels in 1977 . Joachim Hahn from the Institute for Prehistory at the University of Tübingen was able to uncover undisturbed find-bearing layers in the rear area of the cave passage, whereupon excavation campaigns took place again in the following years. Blumentritt took on numerous logistical tasks on a voluntary basis, organized and coordinated the local supporters and partners of the university on site. He was a founding member and driving force of the Schelklingen Museum Society, founded in 1985, which has also supported the excavations in Hohle Fels ever since, and of which he was a lifelong director.

After Hahn's death in 1997, the excavation areas in Hohle Fels were to be filled in and sealed due to a lack of funds. In this regard, Blumentritt held talks with the manager of the Schelklingen cement works, which ultimately led to the building materials group HeidelbergCement agreeing financial and logistical support for the research in Hohle Fels and the annual excavation campaigns to continue to this day.

Blumentritt was one of the first honorary representatives of the State Office for Monument Preservation Baden-Württemberg for decades in the administrative district of Tübingen. The hoard found in Ringingen and the discovery of a linear ceramic settlement near Allmendingen-Altheim go back to his activity in this function .

In 2013, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his many years of voluntary work in the field of prehistory and early history . Since 2014 he has been an honorary citizen of the city of Schelklingen. In 2018 he was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Archeology Prize .

He died in December 2019 at the age of 76 of complications from pneumonia .
