René Leitgen

René Leitgen (* 1959) is a brigadier general in the German Army and department head J3 / 5 in the Bundeswehr Operations Command .

Military background

Education and first years

Leitgen entered as 1,978 cadets in the branch of service of the Artillery Force (Bundeswehr) a. He first went through training in rocket artillery and also completed the Artillery Officer Advanced Course of the US Army. As part of his training, he also studied education at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg .

Uses as a staff officer

After successfully participating in the 33rd National Admiralty / General Staff Officer (LGAN) course from 1990 to 1992 at the Command Academy of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg , he was employed as a General Staff Officer in the HQ AFCENT , as a G3 of the Mountain Infantry Brigade 23 and as a G3 staff officer in the HQ of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC). From 2000 to 2002 Leitgen led the rocket artillery battalion 132 in Sondershausen . From 2004 he became a consultant in the planning staff of the Federal Minister of Defense , before in 2009, as head of the Afghanistan Task Force, he took on responsibility for leading German forces at ISAF in the Bundeswehr Task Force . This was followed by a position as head of operations coordination and deputy chief of staff - also in the operational command - before Leitgen was reassigned to the politics department in the Federal Ministry of Defense . In 2015 he then became Head of Central Target Control in the Army Command in Strausberg . During his time as a staff officer, Leitgen worked twice for SFOR .

Uses as a general

From January 2017, Leitgen was Head of the Combined Joint Seven (CJ7) department at the Resolute Support HQ in Kabul and was responsible for cooperation in the recruitment, training, management and further development of the Afghan armed forces. This was accompanied by the promotion to brigadier general. After his return in February 2018, on May 31, 2018, he took over the post of department head J3 / 5 in the operational command of the Bundeswehr from Brigadier General Ruprecht Horst von Butler . Leitgen also took part in the Munich Security Conference from February 16 to 18, 2018 .

Awards

Leitgen is the bearer of the lone fighter badge ( lone fighter course ), the parachute jumper badge of the Bundeswehr, the USA and the United Kingdom, the NATO medal and the Bundeswehr mission medal for the former Yugoslavia, the Bundeswehr Cross of Honor in gold, the US Army Commendation Medal and the Legion of Merit (Officer) Medal.
