René Moulaert (born November 7, 1901 in Brussels , Belgium , † January 16, 1965 in Ablon-sur-Seine , France ) was a Belgian set designer and film architect for French cinema.

Live and act

Moulaert studied in his hometown Brussels in the early 1920s at the École des Beaux-Arts there and then worked as a set designer for the Vlaamse Volkstoneel (Flemish People's Theater). In 1927 Moulaert went to Paris, where he was allowed to work as a film architect for the first time at the beginning of the sound film era. Nevertheless, the stage (especially the Théâtre Populaire de Paris) initially remained his main field of activity in the French capital, where he worked several times with the actor Louis Jouvet . With the beginning of the occupation (from 1940) Moulaert's cinema career gained momentum. In his professional career, the Belgian has worked for numerous leading entertainment film directors in France. Initially, he mainly designed the sets for Marcel L'Herbier's productions , several times in collaboration with his more experienced colleague Marcel Magniez , and later Moulaert also worked with L'Herbier's colleagues Louis Daquin , Jacques Tati and Julien Duvivier .

In the course of the 1950s and 1960s Moulaert's oeuvre flattened. From now on he equipped mostly simple entertainment films for the masses, especially the routine works by Bernard Borderie , in which Eddie Constantine played the leading roles. Recently Created Moulaert the plush scenes first to Borderies two Angélique - adventure romances. Moulaert's most important work was created immediately after the end of the war in 1945: for Jean Cocteau's film fairy tale " Once Upon a Time " , he created "dream-lost, beautiful fantasy worlds at the side of his younger colleague Lucien Carré , which revealed a high degree of ingenuity, poetry and imagination."
