René Schoemakers (born May 19, 1972 in Kleve ) is a German artist of the visual arts with a focus on painting .

life and work

René Schoemakers studied painting with Peter Nagel at the Muthesius Kunsthochschule Kiel from 1993 to 1999 as well as philosophy and art history at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . As a painter, he works object-related, mainly in a naturalistic manner of representation , which is much more oriented towards naturalism, as he is already known from painting before the emergence of photography, than towards a stylistic orientation towards the creative means of photography, this “painting reminds us of Holbein like something new from the 1920s ” . Central is the moment of distancing from the subject. He prefers to work on multi-part picture series and work cycles, some of which are also arranged object-like in space.

In the work of René Schoemakers, the problem of the visual representation of concrete individual existence is thematized in the medium of painting. Schoemakers are concerned with making the general, in particular, comprehensible in their simultaneity. His works mostly show "on the one hand an elaborate handicraft production of the sensual presence of what is depicted, and on the other hand the demonstration of a conceptual framework that guides the supposedly pure perception". On the one hand, he makes use of image sources from his immediate surroundings and does not use any media images, but often alludes to art historical patterns in the structure and details of the images.

The pictorial staff is mostly limited to their own family, but not in the sense of classic genre painting. “What is striking is the isolation of the people due to the lack of visual relationships; Relationships are only established through the arrangement. ” In some works this imagery is also combined with computer-generated elements.

Since 2014, beginning with the series The Missing Kink , socio-political content has taken on a broader space alongside the originally rather individual-existential themes, whereby the essential structural features of his works are retained. This is in series such as visible The unencumbered self of 2017/2018 and exhibitions on socio-political issues such as Keep it up . In the years 2019/2020 the series Weltgeist was created , which deals with the manifestations of right-wing terror.

René Schoemakers lives in Kiel. He works full-time as a state consultant and study director for philosophy at the "Institute for Quality Development in Schleswig-Holstein Schools".
