Renea is a genus of land-living snails from the order of the Architaenioglossa ("old bandworm").

features

The right-hand wound housing of the representatives of the genus Renea are 1.8 to 6.3 mm high and 0.6 to 2.0 mm wide. They are cylindrical and have up to seven turns. The last deal increases a bit. The housings are densely ribbed, very weak spiral grooves can be seen between the ribs, which are only a little clearer in two species. No seam edge is formed in all types. Some species have a heavily modified turn, which can lead to the formation of a "breathing hole" behind the mouth and next to the suture (with Renea singularis ). A neck bulge is not or only weakly developed.

The whitish translucent body is comparatively small and slim in relation to the housing. The head is set off from the neck by a groove that runs diagonally to the edge of the sole. The sole is separated from the body by a weaker and a stronger longitudinal furrow. At the head the snout can be extended far. The thread-like feelers are long and can be retracted completely. The lid on the back of the foot is quite large and has 2½ to 2¾ whorls.

The animals are of separate sex. The comparatively few eggs laid by the females are very large in relation to their body size.

Similar genera

The genus Renea differs from the other genera of the Mulmnadeln (Aciculidae) as follows: the species of the genus Platyla are smooth, without sculpture. The genus Acicula only has radial grooves, the species of the genus Menkia also have spiral grooves in addition to radial grooves. However, both types have no radial ribs.

Geographical distribution

The distribution area of the Renea species extends from the French and Italian Maritime Alps , the northern Italian Alps, the northern Apennines , through Slovenia , Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to Montenegro and Albania . There is also an island-like area in the Austrian federal states of Upper Austria and Salzburg .

Taxonomy and nomenclature

The taxon Renea was proposed by Geoffrey Nevill in 1880 . Type by monotype is Renea bourguignatiana Nevill, 1880. There are a number of more recent synonyms .
