Renishaw is a medium-sized British manufacturer of products for industrial metrology , rapid prototyping , selective laser melting and medical technology .
history
Renishaw was founded in 1973 by David McMurtry and John Deer. The first product was a tactile sensor for coordinate measuring machines for special measuring requirements for the Olympus engines of the supersonic Concorde aircraft . This was the cornerstone for subsequent products and services.
Renishaw has been listed on the London Stock Exchange since November 1984 . In 2006 the company bought 'itp', a manufacturer of precision probes in Völklingen . In early 2009, the global financial crisis hit Renishaw, which meant job cuts and wages . A year later the business environment recovered and Renishaw hired new employees. In 2010 the company bought the surveying specialists Measuring Devices Ltd . In 2011, Renishaw bought a former Bosch factory in Miskin , Wales and opened a new location there in 2012.
Business areas
Renishaw divides its businesses into metrology and medical technology.
The metrology includes coordinate measuring machines , sensors for CNC machines , devices for rapid prototyping, especially 3D printers based on selective laser melting (SLM) , encoders for mechanical movements and laser interferometers for process monitoring as well as Raman spectroscopy devices for the spectral analysis of materials.
Medical technology includes medical devices for neurosurgery as well as individually 3D-printed implants and dental prostheses .
Locations
Most of the research and development and manufacturing takes place in the UK , mainly in Gloucestershire . There is also the center , in a mill from the 19th century in Wotton-under-Edge . Another location is Miskin in Wales . International locations are Dublin in Ireland and Pune in India . In Germany , Renishaw GmbH is represented in Pliezhausen .
