The RheinCargo is a passenger ship of the shipping company M. Schmitz from Bonn, which is mostly used for port tours in Cologne. history

The Ostseebad Warnemünde on a tour in Rostock

In June 2000 the shipping company Fahrgastschifffahrt Käpp'n Brass from Warnemünde ordered a passenger ship from the Lux-Werft in Mondorf am Rhein to modernize its fleet, which was designed for round trips in the port of Rostock. The keel was laid under construction number 162 in March 2001. After completion, the ship was transferred to Warnemünde under its own power in October of the same year via the Rhine, IJsselmeer , North Sea , and Kiel Canal . With the baptism in the name of Prince Borwin on November 8, 2001, the ship was put into service. After the shipping company had sold an older ship with the same name, the ship was renamed the Ostseebad Warnemünde on October 30, 2006 . After the 2012 season, the shipping company ordered a ship with twice the passenger capacity from the Lux shipyard, which should take over the trips and the name Ostseebad Warnemünde after completion . As a result, she offered the previous name bearer for sale through ship brokers .

The Kölntourist Personenschiffahrt am Dom GmbH , which has been offering round trips through four Cologne ports since 2010 , needed an additional ship at the same time, as it met the requirements of the port tour offered with the existing fleet of three ships that were also used for scheduled round trips on the Rhine , could no longer meet. Mario Schmitz, the husband of the managing director of Kölntourist , bought the Ostseebad Warnemünde and founded an independent GmbH & Co. KG for the operation for liability reasons . At the beginning of January 2013, the new owner transferred the ship to Cologne by water. In consultation with the cooperation partner of the Cologne ports and goods traffic , the ship was renamed RheinCargo . The ship has been in service on the Rhine since April 2013. During a stay at the shipyard in winter 2014, the salon was equipped with modern conference room technology to open up new business areas. In the first two years, the registration port of Cologne was noted on the stern of the ship - when the re-registration was actually carried out in winter 2014/15, the owner decided to keep the original registration port of Warnemünde for legal reasons.

commitment

The RheinCargo on a tour

Initially, the shipping company used the RheinCargo on three harbor tours per week. Due to the good utilization of the journeys, up to ten journeys per week have been offered from April to October since the 2015 season. In order to meet the increased capacity requirements during trade fairs or if one of the two scheduled tour ships is not ready for use, the RheinCargo is also used on the tour from Cologne's old town to Rodenkirchen and back. On special occasions, such as the Cologne Lights or the Rhine in Flames , the shipping company offers all-inclusive trips lasting several hours.

During the “Great Cologne Harbor Tour”, which is moderated by a tour guide, the Rheinauhafen and the Deutz harbor are first approached, then the ship enters the Mülheimer Hafen downstream . Finally, the drives through the Rhine Cargo the four basins of the biggest Cologne port Niehl I . The outlying port of Godorf and the port of Niehl II are not approached, as this would increase the journey time by two to three hours.

The RheinCargo is a three and a half deck passenger ship with a saloon on the closed main deck. In addition to the engine and bow thruster room, the toilet facilities and crew quarters are also located on the lower deck. The saloon on the main deck, which is equipped with a bar, is designed for 102 passengers on planned trips. The upper deck, which is partially covered behind the wheelhouse, can be reached via a staircase in the aft area . There is also space for 102 passengers. Above the wheelhouse up to about the middle of the ship is the so-called “flybridge”, an open deck for 48 passengers with a complete all-round view.

The ship is 32.80 m long and 9.80 m wide. The maximum draft is given as 1.40 m. The RheinCargo is powered by a 368 kW MAN engine via a Schottel twin propeller. For better maneuvering the landing process, the ship has a Schottel pump jet - Bow the strong over a 230 kW diesel-electric motor is driven. The on-board power is generated by an auxiliary machine from MAN with 178 kW and an auxiliary machine from Hatz with 123 kW.
