The Rheinisches Landestheater (RLT) is the largest traveling drama theater in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

On August 16, 1925, the Rheinische Städtebundtheater GmbH was founded with its seat in Neuss . Members of the sponsoring association, in addition to Neuss, were the municipalities of Buer , Kleve , Emmerich , Gladbeck , Kohlscheid , Stolberg as well as the art municipality of Lüdenscheid and the district of Solingen . In 1937 it was renamed "Rheinisches Landestheater". For the 30th anniversary of the theater, the city had the building erected in Drususallee, which remained a permanent venue for the stage until 2000. In 1981 the Rheinisches Landestheater merged with the Theater am Niederrhein. On December 16, 2000, the new venue was opened in the "Horten-Haus" on Oberstrasse.

The architectural design of the building with panoramic windows and a light dramaturgy was recognized by the Ministry of Building and Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Chamber of Architects of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2005 as an “exemplary building of the state”. The centerpiece of the house is the theater with the playhouse on the first floor. The steeply rising theater hall offers a good view of the stage from all of its 443 seats. The spacious foyer of the theater offers a view of the city with the Quirinus Minster. This room is not only a break foyer, but also an event room. In the basement of the building there is a studio stage, which is often used for smaller and contemporary plays as well as children's and youth theater . The central NRW audition of German-speaking drama schools also takes place there every year. The 3 × 20 meter acrylic painting "Large Water Lily Pond" by the artist Salomé has graced the foyer of the Rheinisches Landestheater since 2000 . A year earlier, Salomé had designed costumes and sets for the production of Molière's "The Miser" for the RLT.

Eddie Arent , Lou van Burg , Heinz Drache , Klaus Havenstein , Karl Jahn, Günter Lamprecht , Bruni Löbel , Willy Millowitsch , Brigitte Mira performed under the directorship of Hermann Wetzke (1967–1978) and Karl Wesseler (1978–1983) , Peter Mosbacher , Christian Quadflieg , Edith Schneider , Herta Staal , Wolfgang Völz and Hanne Wieder guest performances. From 1990 to 1993, the later playwright Lutz Hübner worked as a director and actor at the RLT.

The German premiere of Kisch / Hasek's “The Journey Around Europe in 365 Days” took place at the Landestheater, as did the German premiere of Clifford Odet's “Family Noah”. Peter P. Pachl performed “Das prophetische Tier” at the German premiere of Lope de Vegas or the godly patricide St. Julian “directed. In Neuss, Thomas Matschoss, who is currently employed as an actor and author at the Hamburg Thalia Theater, and Ulrich Mokrusch, who will take over the position of artistic director at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven in the 2010/2011 season, began their careers as actors and directors.

Game operation

State theaters fulfill a double function - on the one hand, they play in their own house in their city, and on the other hand, they perform in cities and communities that do not have their own ensemble. The circle of friends and sponsors of the Rheinisches Landestheater has been at the side of the Neuss theater since 1988 in order to support and secure this central piece of theater culture materially and ideally. For this purpose, the association awards the young talent award for the outstanding performance of a member of the theater.

The RLT brings productions to locations throughout North Rhine-Westphalia, occasionally also outside the state borders. Children's and youth theater and theater education are an important focus . The ensemble consists of 17 actors.

From 2009 to 2018, Bettina Jahnke is the director of the RLT. The hallmark of the house is its thematic schedule: Dream 2009/10 !, Fight 2010/11 !, Love 2011/12 !, Believe 2012/13 !, Play 2013/14! and the red / white corporate design.

Reinar Ortman, who came to the RLT as chief dramaturge in 2014, has been appointed interim director for the 2018/19 season.

From the 2019/20 season, Caroline Stolz will be the new artistic director.
