Rhys Anthony Williams (born July 14, 1988 in Perth ) is an Australian-Welsh football player .

Club career

Williams, who was born in Perth, Australia to a British father and Indian mother, received his football training from Perth-based club ECU Joondalup. At the age of 16, he moved to his father in England and completed trial training at Aston Villa and Leicester City before joining Middlesbrough FC in 2005 . In 2007 he signed his first professional contract and came in August 2008 in the 2nd round of the League Cup against Yeovil Town to his competitive debut for Middlesbrough. In January 2009, the second division FC Burnley Williams wanted to borrow for the rest of the season, but since Middlesbrough insisted on a return option for the versatile player, only a so-called "emergency loan" came about, which is limited to 93 days and cannot be extended. Williams quickly established himself as a top performer at Burnley and came in the following months mostly as a right back to 17 missions. The loan period ended exactly after the last match day of the regular season, an exception to the extension of the loan deal for the promotion play-offs was rejected by the league management. While Burnley prevailed in the play-offs without Williams, Middlesbrough FC went the opposite way and rose from the Premier League as penultimate. In the summer of 2016 he moved to Perth Glory , his hometown , where he made his A-League debut on October 8, 2016 against the Central Coast Mariners (3: 3). In total, he came to Perth 15 missions in which he could not score. After a year there, he moved to Melbourne Victory . There he has made 24 games in the A-League so far and scored one goal. Another year later he left Australia and moved to Al-Qadisiyah in Saudi Arabia . He made his debut in the Saudi Professional League on August 31, 2018 against Al Fateh (0-0). In total, he was able to make 28 league games and two goals.

National team

Williams was a total of ten times between 2007 and 2009 in the Welsh U-21 national team, for which he was eligible to play through his grandfather from Wales. In qualifying for the U-21 European Championship in 2009 , he placed with the team in the group stage in front of the favored teams from France and Romania, when he was out in the play-off round against rivals England he was not in the squad. After several appointments to the Welsh senior team, in which Williams was not used, he decided in March 2009 to play for his native Australia and applied to FIFA for clearance for Australia. In the last group game of the 2010 World Cup qualifying against Japan, Williams made his international debut for the Australian national team .

From national coach Pim Verbeek Williams was appointed to the provisional Australian squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but missed the nomination in the final squad because of a long-standing pubic inflammation that did not allow full exposure. In Verbeek's opinion, the treatment of this injury at Middlesbrough was not correct, as the player was continued for weeks by club coach Gordon Strachan using analgesic injections.
