Rhythm Devils is an American rock band formed by the Grateful Dead musicians Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann .
Hart and Kreutzmann formed the Grateful Dead percussion team from 1967 to 1995 with a break from 1971 to 1975. The name Rhythm Devils is based on the fact that the Grateful Dead were one of the few bands that had two drummers who played a larger and independent role in live shows.
When the Grateful Dead performed live, it was common for the shows to be split into different sets - mostly one acoustic and one or more electric. In this second set Hart and Kreutzmann, often with musical guests, played a long drum solo or several solos, which the Deadheads called drums . In contrast, the improvisation phase of the other musicians was called Space . Since these were often cut away for album recordings, the live album Infrared Roses was released in 1991 , which only consisted of drums and space recordings. Hart and Kreutzmann are also featured on the album Dead Set with the song Rhythm Devils .
In the late 1970s, the Devils were hired by Francis Ford Coppola to record and develop the soundtrack for the film Apocalypse Now . Together with other well-known percussion artists such as Airto Moreira and his wife Flora Purim , but also with their bandmate from the Deads Phil Lesh , they recorded the soundtrack in 1979 in Marin County 's recording studios, San Rafael , California , and in Hart's private studio Novato on. In addition to the direct soundtrack, they were also directly responsible for effects in the film.
Two albums emerged from this recording session. The official Apocalypse Now soundtrack, which was released in 1979, and the album The Rhythm Devils Play River Music , which contains recordings and improvisations that were not used for the official soundtrack.
After these recordings, Hart and Kreutzmann concentrated on the Grateful Dead until the death of band leader Jerry Garcia in 1995 and then on their other projects.
It wasn't until April 22, 2006 that the Rhythm Devils got together in a different line-up for a concert for Earth Day in front of Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan , before going on a US tour that took place at the Vegoose Festival on Halloween weekend in Las Vegas , Nevada ended. For this tour they worked with Robert Hunter , who was also the songwriter for the Grateful Dead.
As with Grateful Dead before, Rhythm Devils advocate that fans record concert recordings and freely swap bootlegs. Thanks to the Internet, this is not a problem for fans, especially the Internet Archive , where various Grateful Dead concerts are available, as well as other critically viewed file sharing systems offer this kind of thing.
