Richard Brooke Garnett (born November 21, 1817 in Essex County , Virginia , † July 3, 1863 in Gettysburg , Pennsylvania ) was an officer in the United States Army and Brigadier General of the Confederate States of America (CSA) in the Civil War .

Life

Garnett was born on the Rose Hill manor in Essex County in 1817 . His cousin was Robert Selden Garnett , also a later Confederate general. After his normal school education he attended the military academy in West Point , New York , which he successfully completed in 1841 as the 29th of his class. He then served as a lieutenant in the 6th US Infantry Regiment in various locations in Florida , took part in the second and third Seminole Wars and was then in command of Fort Laramies , Wyoming . During the Mexican-American War 1846-1848 he was a member of a staff in New Orleans .

When the Civil War broke out, Garnett was stationed in California with the rank of captain . He resigned and joined the Confederate Army with the rank of major . On November 14, 1861, he was promoted to brigadier general and was given command of the 1st Brigade of the Confederate Potomac Army , previously formed and led by Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson . It was known as the Stonewall Brigade . Garnett took part in several battles under Jackson's command. His last battle was the Battle of Gettysburg from 1-3. July 1863, where he arrived on the last day of the battle and took part in the famous final attack by the CSA known as " Pickett's Charge ". According to witnesses, he was fatally wounded by grape fire. His body was never identified.
