William Montgomery Gardner

William Montgomery Gardner (born June 8, 1824 in Augusta , Georgia , † June 16, 1901 in Memphis , Tennessee ) was an officer in the US Army and Brigadier General of the Confederate States of America in the Civil War .

Life

Gardner was born in Georgia in 1824. After his normal school education he attended the military academy in West Point , New York , which he successfully completed in 1846 as the 55th of his class. He then served as a lieutenant in the 1st US Infantry Regiment, which was marched at the same time as reinforcement in the Mexican-American War . Here he took part in the siege of Vera Cruz , Mexico , and the battles for Contreras and Churubusco , where he was wounded several times. Honored for his bravery, he was promoted to first lieutenant . After the war, he served as a captain in the regular US Army in various border areas and took part in several exploration expeditions.

When Georgia broke away from the Union as part of the secession , Gardner resigned on January 19, 1861 and was deputy commander of the 8th Georgia Infantry Regiment with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel . Gardner took part with the regiment on July 21, 1861 at the First Battle of Manassas in Prince William County , Virginia and was seriously wounded. On the same day he was promoted to colonel .

On November 14, 1861, Gardner was promoted to brigadier general and was given command of the middle district of Florida . He held this command until November 1863. On July 26, 1864, he took command of the military prisons east of the Mississippi , and from March to April 1865 he was city commander of Richmond , Virginia.

After the Civil War, Gardner went back to Augusta, then lived in Rome , Georgia, had various jobs and eventually moved to live with his son in Memphis, Tennessee, where he died in 1901.
