Richard Dronskowski (born November 11, 1961 in Brilon ) is a German chemist and physicist . He holds the chair for solid-state and quantum chemistry at RWTH Aachen University .

Life

After graduating from high school in Datteln , he studied chemistry and physics at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation . The diploma theses dealt with “The crystal structure of Mn 2 O 7 ” (1987) and “Calculations for the electronic structure of tip-linked M 6 X 8 clusters” (1989). After the dissertation on “Condensed clusters in oxides and arsenides of molybdenum”, which was written by Arndt Simon at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, he received his doctorate in 1990 from the University of Stuttgart . Between 1991 and 1992 he worked as a visiting scientist at Cornell University with Roald Hoffmann , then as a scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart and at the same time as a lecturer at the University of Dortmund . The habilitation on "Preparative, crystallographic, electron-theoretical and magnetic investigations on bromides of monovalent indium" and the appointment as a private lecturer took place in Dortmund in 1995.

After his appointment, he accepted the Chair of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry in 1997 as Director of the Institute for Inorganic Chemistry at RWTH Aachen , which was renamed the Chair of Solid State and Quantum Chemistry in 2006. In the meantime, he was visiting professor for quantum theoretical materials chemistry at Tōhoku University in Sendai in 2004 .

In his research he deals with the preparative solid state chemistry (carbodiimides, nitrides, guanidinates, intermetallic phases, metastable solids, structural research), with the quantum chemistry of the solid state (electronic structure, chemical bond, magnetism, modeling, phase prediction, thermochemistry) and with neutron diffraction.
