Richard Henry Friend (born January 18, 1953 in London ) is a British physicist .

Friend studied at Cambridge University ( Trinity College ), where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1974 . He then was a research student at the Cavendish Laboratory . In 1977 he became a fellow of St. John's College and in 1978 he received his doctorate . As a post-doctoral student , he was a CNRS scientist at the University of Paris-South in 1977/78 . In 1980 he became a University Demonstrator, 1985 Lecturer and 1993 Reader at Cambridge University. He has been the Cavendish Professor of Physics there since 1995 and chairman of the physics faculty since 2004. In 1986/87 he was visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara and since 2006 he has also been professor at the National University of Singapore .

Friend is a pioneer in the field of semiconductors made from polymers . Using these materials, he demonstrated FETs (1988), LEDs (1990), efficient photovoltaic diodes (1995), lasers (1996), directly printable (with inkjet printers ) transistor circuits (2000), light-emitting transistors (2006).

He has been Chief Scientist at Cambridge Display Technology since 1996 and Scientific Advisor at Plastic Logic Ltd. since 2000 . He co-founded both companies.
